Biography
Seok Yun (b. 1999, Seoul) is a luthier, composer, and performer based in Amsterdam.
His work combines instrument making, live electronics, and performance, focusing on hybrid acoustic–electronic systems and the relationship between performer, instrument, and physical gesture.
Yun began playing drums at the age of thirteen before switching to bass at seventeen. In 2017 he began studying pop music bass at Yeoju Institute of Technology in South Korea before continuing his studies in the Netherlands in 2020. He later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Double Bass from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and began studying Live Electronics there in 2025.
During his studies he worked with and received instruction from Ruud Ouwehand, Ernst Glerum, Clemens van der Feen, Frans van der Hoeven, and Servaas Jansen. He has also participated in masterclasses with Larry Grenadier, Brad Mehldau, Shai Maestro, and John Clayton.
As a bassist, he performs on both jazz and classical double bass and has experience performing in a wide range of contexts, including indie and pop projects as well as opera productions and orchestral settings.
Alongside his musical practice, Yun has been active as a luthier since 2024. Initially focusing primarily on double bass repair, his work expanded after beginning to study with Camille Dolibeau, whose guidance broadened his approach to instrument making and restoration.
Through this practice, Yun engages with the broader development of contemporary string instrument making. He regularly attends Cremona Musica (formerly Mondomusica) in Cremona, Italy, following current innovations and developments in modern string instruments.
Alongside instrument making and performance, his artistic practice also extends into visual and material experimentation, including hand-knitted garments designed in relation to musical performance and artistic identity.
